Summer is in full swing here in Minnesota, and we are spending every spare moment soaking up the sun and enjoying the great outdoors. As we have been working on the landscaping at our own home, I started thinking about decks vs. patios. What were the pros and cons of each? Which one was better for resale? Which one is easier to install? So today I am going to share my findings with you all. If you’ve been trying to decide which is the right choice for you, then keep reading!
To start we have to make sure we know what makes these two so very different. Deck’s are an open outdoor platform that extends from a house. Whereas a patio is a paved space on the ground. They can be anywhere in a yard, from right up against the house, to further away from the house.
When it comes to picking which is the best option for you, it is important to know the main pros and cons of each option. When it comes to the pros of a patio, the first thing to come to mind is its budget friendly nature. Other pros include easy maintenance, and its long life span! When it comes to cons, we must be aware that patios do not work on uneven terrain. They can also be more susceptible to staining, as well as cracks over time.
Now the huge pro with decks is the resale value. Now from Nationwide explained “There’s a 76% return on investment for a wooden deck on average.” That percentage is high, and definitely worth consideration. Other pros include their customization, their ability to be built on uneven terrain, and the views that you can obtain from building a raised deck. When it comes to the cons it is important to consider the higher maintenance with more washing and re-staining involved in order to maintain their integrity, as well as weight restrictions, cost, and obtaining permits to build.
All of these things are just a few of the things to consider when it comes to choosing whether a patio or deck is the right fit for your home! Which one is the best fit for you?
